To God be the Glory-Lyrics (Week 5)

To God Be the Glory
Words: Fanny J Crosby (1875)
Music: William H. Doane (1875)

To God be the glory, great things He hath done;

So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,

Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,

And opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Refrain
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

Let the earth hear His voice!

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

Let the people rejoice!

O come to the Father, thru Jesus the Son,

And give Him the glory, great things He hath done.

Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done,

And great our rejoicing thru Jesus the Son;

But purer, and higher, and greater will be

Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.

Refrain

It is Well with My Soul-Lyrics (Week 4)

It is Well with My Soul
Words: Horatio G. Spafford (1873)
Music: Phillip P. Bliss (1876)

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,

When sorrows like sea billows roll;

Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,

It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Refrain:

It is well, (It is well,) with my soul, (with my soul)
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,

The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;

The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,

Even so, it is well with my soul.

Refrain:

It is well, (It is well,) with my soul, (with my soul)
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Book of Colossians Word Study ~ "Understanding"

In doing some more detailed reading and studying, Paul's message to the brethren in Colossae should prove to us that we can truly have a clear understanding of God's will through Jesus Christ.

I chose the word "understanding" to investigate, but its English form is only observed three times in the Book of Colossians. But in digging deeper into a study of text, we should look closely at what other words are comparable or equivalent to one another in our English Bibles.

In the original language of the New Testament, the word for "to know" is ginosko. Paul's usage of this and its other literary forms is widespread throughout Colossians. "Know", "knowledge", "understood" and "understanding" coonsitute the various usages and forms of ginosko.

What's so powerful about this encouraging epistle is that one of the major points of this text is we can know all there is to know about God's mystery of Christ (cf. Colossians 1:25-27)! The church in Colossae knew and so can we!

"When we hear we can learn, and when we learn then we can understand, and when we understand we can then walk...and keep walking!"

Check out:
Colossians 1:6, 7, 9, 10; Colossians 2:1, 2, 3; Colossians 3:10, 24; Colossians 4:1, 6, 8

*Note: there a couple cases where "know" or "knowing" mean, to realize or to have seen. This is not the ginosko word, rather oida in the original language.

Enjoy and let me know what you observe in your own personal study.

Word study on "all" from Colossians 1

In just 29 verses within the first chapter of Colossians the word "all, or every, or entire", depending on your translation, is used 20 times! In searching for key words, usually a word that helps highlight a theme or idea maybe mentioned a half dozen times or so within a couple chapters of a New Testament book. Here, it's pretty clear Paul wants to convey to his audience that "pas" (Greek word for "all/every/entire"), and its varying Greek forms, hits the ears, eyes and heart of the Christian.

Take a moment to read the chapter again and focus on this key word and concentrate on the context in which it is used. Remember, every word in the Bible is intentionally used for all of us to understand (cf. Ephesians 3:3-5). When Paul, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirt, writes the word "all", he is not meaning 99.9%, but 100%...really!

I also hope that as you highlight or underline every use of "all/every/entire" in chapter 1, you will allow the flow of the text to continue reading the rest of Colossians and find any other form of "all". Enjoy this study!

Verses in chapter 1:
4, 6, 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 23, 28

The word "Rescued" in Colossians 1:13

Once again, this study is not intended to be a complete breakdown, but to serve as a catalyst for you to further grow and understand God's word in this area.

The powerful text of Colossians 1:13 shows how Jesus Christ, full deity (cf. Col. 1:19; 2:9), has resued (past tense) us and transferred (past tense) us into His family (kingdom). This rescue on behalf of our Savior is a single-point, one-time action event when we submit ourselves to His will through obeying His gospel call. It's important to note here that the kingdom mentioned is not future tense as some think a millenial kingdom was to come, but rather they were presently living within His kingdom.

Some points to make regarding those 'rescued':

1. Those who are of the family of the rescued are affectionately called "saints" back in verse 2, 4 & 12 of chapter 1.

2. Those rescued are reconciled in ordered to be presented holy and blameless and beyond reproach (1:22).

3. Those rescued will remain saved if they continue to be steadfast (1:23).

4. Paul willingly labors for the church (those rescued) cf. Col. 1:24-29.

5. By rescuing us, Christ made us alive! cf. Col. 2:13

6. We were/are rescued when we die to elementary priciples...and don't get carried back to them! cf. Col. 2:8, 13 & 20

7. By being rescued by Christ, we are raised up with Him! Col. 3:1

8. Those "chosen" were rescued when they chose to follow Christ. Col. 3:12

Hope this stirs a good Bible study! Enjoy!

Deeper than the ocean
and wider than the sea
is the grace of the Savior
for sinners like me

Sent from the Father
and it thrills my soul
Just to feel and to know
That His blood makes me whole

CHORUS:

His grace reaches me
Yes, His grace reaches me
And ‘twill last thru eternity

Now I'm under His control
and I'm happy in my soul
Just to know
that His grace reaches me

Higher than the mountain
and brighter than the sun
it was offered at Calv'ry
for ev'ry one

Greatest of treasures
and it's mine today
Tho' my sins were as scarlet
He has washed them away

(CHORUS)
