The Word "heard" and its Importance

As we have read Colossians this week, you may have noticed a key word "heard" mentioned several times in chapter 1. Paul makes it clear as to what first took place before the Christians had faith in Christ. This action also contributed to their love for the saints because if they never first heard the gospel they would not have known and understood the Word of Truth and how to apply it to their lives.

There are steps taken which leads us to salvation in Christ. But what must be done first is to hear or read God's word. There are so many angles to look at the word "heard/hear" but what I want to do is not give you a complete study but have you look at a few texts regarding this word, consider their importance and hopefully stir you into a deeper Bible study with those you know and love.

Colossians 1:5-6
Romans 10:15-18
Galatians 3:2
Ephesians 3:3-5 (wrote/read)
1 John 1:3-5

One last thing, if you like. Re-read Colossians 1 and notice how many different ways Paul describes the gospel (v. 5). As you read through the entire chapter, and it may take a few times, you will recognize the various descriptors representing God's word. I found 6. Let me know what you find!
Here are a few:
"words of truth"
"gospel"
"word of God"
??What else did you find??

Enjoy!

"Ancient Words" lyrics and YouTube link

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viej19PNN8M
Link to song above ^^

Lyrics below:

Holy words long preserved
For our walk in this world
They resound with God's own heart
Oh, let the ancient words impart

Words of Life, words of Hope
Give us strength, help us cope
In this world, where e'er we roam
Ancient words will guide us home

Ancient words ever true
Changing me and changing you
We have come with open hearts
Oh, let the ancient words impart

Holy words of our Faith
Handed down to this age
Came to us through sacrifice
Oh heed the faithful words of Christ

Holy words long preserved
For our walk in this world
They resound with God's own heart
Oh let the ancient words impart

Ancient words ever true
Changing me and changing you
We have come with open hearts
Oh, let the ancient words impart

100 Days of Scripture ~ 2013 "PCP Challenge"

Welcome back for another summer of saturating yourselves with God's Word! And if this is your first year, welcome to the 100 Days of Scripture! This year we will combine reading with memorization and study/devotion time for those who desire to r-e-a-l-l-y stretch themselves. What does "PCP Challenge" mean? Well, the books from the Bible which will be utilized are Proverbs, Colossians and Psalms. The challenge is developed with the hopes of those entering the 100 Days of Scripture will draw closer to God and establish a good habit of daily devotion to God and His Word, which I'm sure you may already have. Also, consider an opportunity to "challenge" a friend with the 100 Days of Scripture. Consider finding a study partner this summer during the challenge, or use it as an evangelistic tool. Families might want to plan this challenge as their devotional for the coming weeks. "Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another." (Prov. 27:17) I am so excited to get started! I know you are up to this year's challenge and I'm cheering you on as our 3rd year together begins!

Let's get to the details (There will be a schedule to follow, don't worry):

1. Many years ago, our family had heard about a daily Bible reading plan that included reading a chapter of Proverbs throughout the year. Which meant you would have read through Proverbs 12 times in a year, and may I add, Proverbs is not too shabby of a book to 'chisel' upon your heart. And how you remember which chapter you are in is by knowing what day of the month it is. If today was the 26th, then you are to read the 26th chapter of Proverbs. What happens when a month does not have 31 days since Proverbs contains 31 chapters? I'm glad you asked! Then you just double up on 1, 2 or even 3 days, if needed. In our 100 Days of Scripture, the only month we will double up is in June and it will be done on the 30th. Confused? Don't worry, I have a schedule for all of us to follow. :)

2. Along with a daily chapter in Proverbs, a portion from Colossians and then Psalms will be read for that particular day. Colossians (4 chapters) will only take up the first 4 days and the other 96 days will be consumed by reading all 150 Psalms.

3. Every Monday, a portion of text from Colossians will be memorized and reviewed for the week. Not every verse in Colossians will be memorized for the 100 days, but some good solid texts have been selected for memory work. On some weeks, the texts memorized will be a continuation from the previous week, and on others, it will be a new portion of Colossians. Got it? Good! So, 14 out of the 15 Mondays in our 100 Days of Scripture will have new texts from Colossians to memorize.

4. Every Tuesday, a song will be introduced for you to learn and practice daily. Not all songs will coincide with the Colossians memorization and study (I'll get to that with #5), but I'll get close. Anyway, if you can, sing with it friends, family, or whoever! I'm hoping to have a YouTube link to a good copy of the song in case you do not know it or if you do not have a hymnal at home.

5. Every Thursday, I will provide a word/term study for you to discuss with others or for your own personal Bible study. It will revolve around a key word(s) within the Colossians memory verses for that particular week (e.g. Colossians 3:12-14; the term "put on" will be studied). I will make sure the study is posted on the Facebook Event Page or on my blog or BOTH with an adequate amount of time to look it over before that particular Thursday.

6. Finally, I encourage you to review all memorization, songs and study on every Saturday. If you can, do the memory work from Week 1 and every new week add to it. So by the end of Week 14 you are saying all the verses from every week by memory. Cool, huh?!

7. This is quite a challenge and, again, I hope what comes from these 100 days is a greater knowledge and stronger relationship with our Creator. Do what you can, but whatever you do, do for the Lord!

Preachers That Teach

by Ed Wharton

Fellowship In The Gospel Newsletter
Bear Valley Bible Institute of Denver
May 1968

Upon re-thinking the Biblical definition of the work of the local preacher it occurs to me that teaching plays a major role in the God-ordained task of the evangelist. Simply stated, God ordained the preacher to (1) teach the lost (Matt. 20:19) and (2) to continue to teach the church thereafter (Matt. 28:20). It’s the method of expediting this work which often makes the difference in the preacher’s fruit-bearing.

Preachers continually deplore the lack of spiritual growth manifested among the membership. But however your pulpit preaching and classroom teaching may grow out of conscientious preparation and enthusiastic delivery just remember this: It lacks that personal touch. And ONLY personal teaching can supply much that is needed for converting the lost and maturing the spiritual babe. Furthermore, what CAN and SHOULD be taught to one is not necessarily what MAY be taught to another. It depends on where they are spiritually. They may be down right carnal! Yet they may at the same time be likeable and very teachable.

Let’s re-read the Bible and get some of that teaching and preaching out of the formal pulpit-classroom situation. Get it back to an informal house-to-house situation where you can drink coffee, lean back and listen to the other fellow’s question, and have time to give a sufficient answer.

In the following I want to discuss four phases of teaching which the preacher can fill up his time with overnight! Each phase is on a different level progressing from the the rudiments to the stronger meat of the Word. All but one, the last one, are in the home, couched in the informal atmosphere so conducive to that personal touch.

1. Teach The Lost. In his home or yours, that is. The greatest task here is setting up the class; finding the person who is willing to let you teach him. But that’s your job! When you win that soul the church has experienced growth. Til this is a part of your life, you just are not a New Testament preacher.

2. Teach Members of the Church. In your house! This requires that you go beyond first principles…at least eventually. This type of class is a cinch to set up. It requires almost no effort to get more than you’d really want in a home Bible Study. Just ask a couple of families to come over to your house on a regular basis for a couple of months of real down-to-earth Bible study. If they’ve already found out you know something and can teach it they’ll jump at the opportunity. No sweat. This class will be very rewarding for you both.

3. Teach the teachers of the local congregation. That is, in your home. This is “teacher training” in the Bible itself. That may well be a switch from the kind they have been used to. Seldom do local teachers excel the preacher in knowledge of the Bible. If they are sincere they will learn something. If not, you will! You may be educated when you learn from them what they “thought” the Bible taught on some very important subjects. A sobering thought is this: these local teachers are teaching (?) your wife and children. Are you confident in this? If not, do something about it; teach the teachers! This is an effective means of providing for greater spiritual growth of the local church. Remember, 2 Tim. 2:2 is addressed to the preacher! This level of teaching is yet more requiring than the others.

4. Teach intensive Bible courses. This is the only one of the four which I recommend being taught in the formal classroom situation. Purpose: To educate the church in the Bible. To increase their Christianity. What do you mean “intensive” ? Remember what it’s like back in the classroom at a school of preaching. Then, pour it on! They’ll love it! Provided, of course, that you do. Give them assignments, themes to write, memory work. (Careful: do not overload) If you are energetic and knowledgeable and have a good-natured approach the will literally eat it up. I promise.

I speak out of experience. The above formula will work. It will provide growth both numerically and spiritually. And a final motivation I might mention just here: when the church grows through the preacher’s efforts he doesn’t have to move every year or two. Right?

100 Days of Scripture 2012

It's back! Thanks to some wonderful encouragement from my bride, Laura Warnes, my family, and my friends Esther Morris, Richard Hill, and J. Randal Matheny, the 100 Days of Scripture will continue in 2012!

This year we will tackle reading the New Testament from Memorial Day weekend (May 27) thru Labor Day weekend (September 3). A very BIG Thank You goes out to Richard Hill, Steve Higginbotham, and the Miller St. church of Christ on this year's idea!

Below, is the daily schedule for us to follow throughout the summer. This is a schedule that I have put together that will not be according to chronological order, nor from any other 'daily reading' plan. Richard has helped me with the chapter break down and, thru our discussion, will have a little rhyme and reasoning to the schedule. You'll see that we start right off with John's writings and then later keep Luke's writings together (Luke & Acts) as if we are reading volume 1 and volume 2 of his inspired writings. I've also tried to make sure we are not reading too many large books in consecutive order.

Thanks for participating and enjoy God's Word this summer!!

A Ready Recollection: Uplifting Archives

As the Director of Alumni Relations for the Bear Valley Bible Institute of Denver (BVBID), I orchestrate the school's alumni publication "Uplift" (and may I add, I'm NO journalist!). But I've enjoyed the opportunity to fumble through old articles of past heroes in The Faith and many times minutes in the old articles have turned to hours. I'm going to start a section in our "Uplift" called A Ready Recollection which will feature 'classic' articles from the past 30+ years that BVBID has published "Uplift".

This article I'm posting now was from Warren Wilcox who received his reward into Glory in 2008. Warren and his beautiful wife, Carolyn, served the school for over 40 years together and Carolyn contiues laboring for the Lord at the Bear Valley church of Christ and BVBID.

If you are interested in receiving "Uplift" from the institute, PLEASE let me know and give me your church address or personal address. Thanks!

In Him,
Jon

A Ready Recollection: Uplifting Archives
“The Most Misunderstood Motive”
by Warren Wilcox
(Uplift, March/April 1988)

I didn’t always let my kids go everywhere they wanted to go, have everything they wanted (even if I could have afforded it), nor do everything they wanted to do. That didn’t always make me popular (I hope it will someday). I acted this way because of love. Love is the most misunderstood motive in the world.
Love caused Jesus to call religious leaders hypocrites (Matthew 23). It got Him crucified. Love caused Jesus to teach with the authority of God when He spoke the words of God. I caused people to question Him (Matthew 21:23). Love caused Jesus to tell the religious leaders of the day who would not repent they would be destroyed. They sought to “lay hold on Him.”
More examples could be offered, but the point is this: Love does not always allow people to go on in their regular way of life – it tells them where they are wrong and what they need to do to get better. At least that’s what Jesus’ love did.
I often hear about Jesus’ love and I am glad He showed it to the world and especially to us as Christians. However, we must understand that love, real love, demands that we not only have tender feelings toward the lost, those in sin, those whose lives are messed up, etc. but also demands that we tell them (even insist) that they get their lives in harmony with God’s laws. This includes those who have never become Christians, those who have but have fallen away, and those who because of believing false doctrine or who are living in immorality are headed towards apostacy. That’s what Jesus did. And it cost Him His popularity and His life. It may cost us the same. But that’s love,. Real love. And God rewards it. It may even require us to tell those who preach “love” to learn what it really is (Hebrews 12:5-11).
P.S. I Love You.
